My friends wife picked up this tub of Proraso Pre Shave Cream for me the other day. She manages a local drug store and they were blowing these out, and figuring I might be interested, she picked some up for me. I tend to not use Pre Shave Oil or Cream, I do at times use coconut oil as pre shave oil, but never really needed or bothered with any ‘official’ product. That doesn’t mean I still wasn’t excited to test out yet another product.
I’m a fan of the Proraso line, products are great, price is good, and it seems to be the online ‘classic shaving’ product available in store (at least in my area). I had both high expectations because it was Proraso, but at the same time didn’t expect much because I am quite happy with my shave without any creams or oil.
Straight away upon opening the jar of Proraso Pre Shave Cream you received that distinct smell that is associated with the Proraso Green Shaving Cream, the Menthol and Eucalyptus – both powerful and refreshing. As per the instructions I wet my face the way I would normally before a shave and then applied the cream to my beard (just for reference sake I had a couple of days growth). The cream itself has the consistency of Noxema cream, not too thick, but thick enough. I only needed a small amount to cover my entire beard. The whiteness from the cream disappeared as I applied it.
The scent immediately opened my eyes, and as expected felt crisp on my skin. I let the cream sit while I lathered my soap; the longer I lathered, the more tingly the pre shave cream became. Not a burning sensation – but tingly. I for one enjoyed the sensation, but I could see some finding the combination of scent and tingly feeling bit too much. What I did find interesting is that the feeling and scent remained even after my first, second, and although slightly with my third pass – which I interrupted as a positive assuming that the pre shave cream was still working even after rinsing and re-lathering. . Once again not a problem if you don’t mind the sensation.
As for how it perform it’s hard to say. The shave was comfortable – smooth in fact, new blades, first pass with my Bakelite slant, and the other two with my Edwin Jagger 89lbl. The shave felt really close and the Alum Bloc told me that I did a good job. But then again I often have the same performance after shaving without pre shave cream. Leaving me to believe that this product would be best appreciated by those who have sensitive skin and fight razor burn.
Although the product is labelled as a pre shave cream the box suggests that I apply some after shaving. To quote the box: “Apply Proraso Cream and massage gently. You will feel a pleasant freshness on your skin and avoid stinging or irritation.” Which I did, and I did feel a pleasant freshness on my skin.
My final verdict on the Proraso Pre Shave Cream is that I love it for free, and I would actually buy some again if the price is right. I see myself using this every shave until it is gone, but not so much because of the result of the shave, but the fresh feeling that it provided during my shave. Feeling my face now several hours after shaving, it is soft and still relatively stubble free.
