The men’s skin care world is quickly becoming crowded; products that have been traditionally directed towards women, are now starting to include men as well. With the crowding of products comes selection, and with selection choice, and with choice decisions. And one of those decisions that needs to be made is your aftershave products.
Some men are unsure what to do when it comes to aftershave products – lotion or aftershave balm. Which should you use? Do you use both? Like many items in the wet shaving world it really comes down to your own personal preference, but educating yourself before making a purchase is always beneficial.
Aftershave lotion, or splash, is an alcohol based liquid that you would splash on your face after shaving. This is probably what most of use remember our fathers and grandfathers using growing up, probably followed by some form a cologne (in the case of my father probably cheap cologne). The lotion has antiseptic in it to help prevent any infection to cuts you may have given yourself while shaving. The lotion also helps tighten the face and pores. Lotion also tends to have a stronger scent to it. The downside to using lotion is, for one thing it stings when you apply it, especially if you have a few extra nicks and cuts (but in a strange way it is also refreshing at the same time). Some may also experience some irritation and / or drying of the skin.
Enter aftershave balm. Balm is alcohol free and more creamy than anything else and helps to hydrate your skin. If you suffer from dry skin, or are prone to razor burn or bumps balm may be the choice for you. It is also a good choice if you do not prefer to much of a scent in your products. Or if you don’t want your cologne to have to drone out your aftershave balm.
So in the end the choice is yours. You may have to experiment a bit before finding what works best for you. But that is part of the fun. Below are a couple of suggestions to get you going.
