What’s In That Lather – A Closer Look at Products on My Shelf

The other day I came across the site goodguide.com and it got me thinking about how safe the products that I use on a daily basis are.  It isn’t that I am unaware of the issues with many of the products out there, it’s more that I have been choosing to ignore any possible issues.

There is so much information out there on what is bad for you and will probably result in your untimely death that you could easily spend hours and hours on how your daily routine is actually killing you. I’m making jokes but all joking aside this issue is probably best to not ignore. So out of curiosity I decided to take a look at four shave cream and soaps that I had on hand to see if and how they may be killing me.

Depending on the source, the list of items that could be potentially harmful is exhausting, but for the sake of simplicity, thanks to www.brooklyngrooming.com (check it out for an explanation as to what each toxin does), I have narrowed it down to a top four ingredients that may be killing me.

  1. Propylene Glycol
  2. Parabens
  3. Phthalates, sometimes listed as DEP, DBP and DMP
  4. Formaldehyde, often listed as DMDM hydantoin, Quaternium-15, Diazolidinyl urea, Imidazolidinyl urea, Bronopol, Hydroxymethylglyconate,

Proraso Green

Propylene Glycol – YES
Parabens – NO
Phthalates – NO
Formaldehyde – YES (Tetrasodium)

Taylor of Old Bond Street – Coconut

Propylene Glycol – NO
Parabens – NO
Phthalates – NO
Formaldehyde – NO

Edwin Jagger Limes & Pomegranate

Propylene Glycol – NO
Parabens – NO
Phthalates – NO
Formaldehyde – NO

Cella Shave Soap

Propylene Glycol – NO
Parabens – NO
Phthalates – NO
Formaldehyde – NO

Overall not bad at all with the exception of the Proraso Green, which admittedly is a bit disappointing. Now to be fair I feel like I need to head back to university in order to decipher these labels, so if I have made an error please feel free to let me know.

So where are all these chemicals hiding? To be fair the above soaps all originate from Europe so they may have different standards than in North America. So let’s take a quick look at some more main stream North American shave creams.

FOAMY SHAVE FOAM— REGULAR from Gillette
Propylene Glycol – NO
Parabens – NO
Phthalates – NO
Formaldehyde – NO

As far as I could tell the above was free from all those agents but it is worth pointing out that it does contain SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE which you can read about here, along with some propane.  Propane!! Yes I understand that it has to do with the foaming aspect of the can but man.

For good measure a quick look at also came up rather clean.

Schick Hydro Sensitive Shave Gel
Propylene Glycol – NO
Parabens – NO
Phthalates – NO
Formaldehyde – NO

The Schick Hydro Gel also came in clean with the four toxins I was looking at but there was still some scary sounding ingredients in there like PEG-90M – I might just be me, but I prefer my ingredients numbers free.

So from this small sample it seems as though I am safe for now, especially since I don’t use the more mainstream, number ingredient, shave creams. The list of items to be on the look out is much greater than the four listed here and can be a mind numbing to sort out. Which is why many of us probably avoid thinking too much about it outside of the maybe parabens.
