During my visit to Pasteur Pharmacy last week I had the pleasure of meeting a fellow wet shaver, mainly thanks to my daughter who had given him a hug mistaking his shaved head for mine. Her error provided me with a great conversation and discussion about great shave soaps, specifically American shave soaps.
As I started to suggest more and more shave soaps we began to realize that, for the most part, I was mainly suggesting European soaps. He was a European so he was familiar with most that I suggested (he did end up picking up some Cella), but he was mainly interested in American options. I wasn’t stumped for suggestions, but I did have to stop and think what American shave soaps I would recommend, and in the end I couldn’t really get past all the great soaps and creams in front of my face to provide a proper response and only provided a couple of suggestions.
So, a few days on and I thought I would make a list of some shaving soaps that I have used and I would classify as great American shave soaps for my friend (if you happen to read this drop me a line and let me know your thoughts on the Cella).
I’m sure that I have missed more than a few soaps but I limited this list to soaps I have used. Have an American soap suggestion? Post it below I am always looking for great new soaps.
Mama Bear Soaps offers hand crafted soaps that are a joy to use. There quality and effectiveness of their soaps would stand up against any soap on the market today. If you haven’t given it a try you should. Available from Amazon.com.Stirling Shave Soap is another great offering from an American artisan. With so many different fragrances, from Orange Chill to Mountain man, there is something for everyone. Regardless of the fragrance a great shave awaits. Available from West Coast Shaving.
Barrister & Mann seems to be coming up in many of my posts lately but it is for good reason, they provide a quality product. The soap loves its water and is really easy to lather. Available from Amazon and West Coast Shaving.
Ogallala Bay Rum is an all around amazing soap, lather that is super slick and easy to build, a smell that is fantastic (assuming you are a fan of bay rum), and a great price point. Available from Fendrihan
