Best Shaving Soaps for 2017

One of the best things about a new year is the chance to improve on the previous year and make the decision to make the new year better than the year before. One great way to improve your year is to start every day with a great shave, and one way to have a great shave is with great soap. The perfect shave in the morning can really get you going both with how you look and how it makes you feel.  So here you go, we compiled our best five shaving soap list for 2017. We will update this page as the year progresses with any new soaps that deserve to be on the list.

Proraso Green Shave Soap

First up on the list is Proraso Green Soap.  One of mine and most people’s favourite soaps, often the first shave soap that people try because of its accessibility (it is one of the few traditional shaving soaps I can actually purchase in my drug store), the price is also very attractive, and of course the shave and protection that it provides is equally impressive. The menthol and eucalyptus provides a very distinct and memorable experience.  If you haven’t tried this yet you need to get yourself a puck sooner rather than later. Available from TopOfTheChain.

Barrister and Mann Night Music

Any shaving soap list without a Barrister and Mann offering really is incomplete. Night Music is Barrister and Mann’s Valentine’s day offering and you may want to get your hands on it. If you are unfamiliar with Barrister and Mann they are one of the finest artisan soap makers to come along in recent years. With an interesting list of ingredients including vanilla, bergamot, and five different types of musk, it provides a truly unique shaving experience. Scent aside Barrister and Mann soaps provide a slick shaving surface and ample cushion. Really the only soap you may ever need. Check out their site for more information –

Soap Commander

Soap Commander is another artisan soap maker to make the list and it’s well deserved. They have a great story to go along with their product which you can read about here.  Soap Commander is available on their website and on Amazon.

The shave soap that started it all for me after a shave in a barbershop in Italy. The sweet almond scent is such a departure from the typical scent that most men are use to today from all the big brand shave cream. The consistency of this soap is a bit different than other soaps, it’s softer than other pucks listed here but equally impressive in performance. It might require a bit more elbow grease to build up a lather but the subsequent shave is definitely worth it. Here is our Cella review. Also available from Amazon.

Ogallala Bay Rum

Ogallala Bay Rum soaps is one of the those finds that I would have never come across if it wasn’t for switching over to traditional wet shaving. Each of their bay rum soaps provides a different experience, from peppercorn to lemon grass. One of my favourites is  Ogallala Bay Rum & Sweet Orange Shave Soap. You really need to try it to appreciate it. The soap is a joy to lather requiring very little effort and provides a nice rich lather. For more info check them out here, or again on Amazon.

However you decide to spend your 2017 be sure to at least start each day with a quality shave with a quality soap.
